I took a train with Whitney from Sarajevo to Mostar, the most important city of Herzegovina, we arrived in the night, once in the Mostar railway station, people from the hostel came to pick up for us and carried us to the bedrooms. Because the bus to Dubrovnik was at 12.30 after leaving our luggage, we have to start the city tour because I was not going to meet to hole city, and in fact I couldn’t see the hole city.
Some years ago I heard for first time about Mostar and its famous stone bridge, I saw a documentary about how was renewed, and since that moment I can’t explain why I never forgot that bridge and I said ok, I’m in Bosnia I HAVE to go Mostar and see the bridge, and after being there I was like enchanted it’s the most beautiful bridge I never seen in my life. The old part of the city is also made of stones, but is partially destroyed because of the war, I think is more destroyed than Sarajevo.
Mostar is an ancient city, the Turks occupied Mostar in 1468, they gave it the name of Kopru hisar, but the name Mostar was mentioned for first time in 1474. The ancient caravan routes passed thought Mostar along which the cargoes of salt, fish, olive and other goods were transported from Dubrovnik, Kotor and other littoral towns. The old bridge was completed in 1566, its span has 26m and its located in the Neretva canyon. The bridge was totally destroyed during the 1992-1995 war, but was renewed in 2004 with UNESCO founds and the world bank.
